Did you hear our volunteer, Jeff Johnson, on Collin County’s KLAK radio station last Friday? He and I spent a few minutes discussing our shooting clay tournament on June 5th with DJ and friend of the Inn, Johnny B. There is still time to register- see our sidebar for all the details.

At last Tuesday night’s City Council meeting in McKinney, council woman and Samaritan Inn Board member, Geralyn Kever, read a proclamation , written by Mayor Bill Whitfield, congratulating the Samaritan Inn for 25 years of service and proclaiming May 16th Samaritan Inn Day. 15 staff members attended the meeting and the inn logothanked the community for their continued support of our mission.

Janet Warren, Friends of The Inn Thrift Store manager, hosted a party last week for our gala volunteers. It takes an inordinate amount of people to plan our annual gala and we were pleased to have an opportunity to thank them. Nan Riederer, gala committee volunteer said,  ”At my age, I have had an opportunity to serve on many boards and committees, but none have been like The Samaritan Inn. There is absolutely no agenda; they are only trying to serve the homeless people in our community, and we are reminded of that at every meeting”.

We are thrilled to announce a new partnership with Torchmark, a holding company specializing in life and supplemental health insurance, headquartered in McKinney. Mark McAndrews, CEO, has visited the Inn and offered up a variety of unbelievable opportunities-Torchmark’s marketing department will assist us with a summer mail campaign that will help us raise the revenues we need in this difficult economy. Torchmark will also secure ten apartments in the community for people ready to graduate, but still not able to afford market value rents and Torchmark employees will volunteer in a number of areas of operation within the shelter. We are overwhelmed by the generosity of this “corporation with a conscience”.

Please help us welcome Jim Malatich, our new Director of Operations. Jim is the former Executive Director of Crossroads Family Services and has thirty years of social services experience and a real heart for our mission.

Taste of Addison is this weekend and we still need volunteers to help. Remember, The Samaritan Inn is a beneficiary. There are shifts available Friday, Saturday and Sunday, please contact Cheryl at cherylspofford@thesamaritaninn.org to sign up or get additional information.

We currently have an immediate need for maternity clothes, size small (4, 6 or 8) for one of our residents. If you are able to help, please drop them off any time and mark them: Tammy

canned foodOn May 30th from 8am to 1pm Liberty Baptist Church will be conducting a huge food drive for the Samaritan Inn- it has been promoted in all of the local papers as well as multiple websites. Got Food? Head over to Liberty. For more information visit:  www.libertymbc.com.

The Jr. Samaritans from Plano West, Shepton and McKinney High Schools are busy at work with their fundraising teams this weekend . Team Extreme (Plano West) will hold a rummage sale on May 9 from 8am -1pm at 5902 Bent Creek Trail, Dallas.  The Shepton Samaritans (Shepton High School) are collecting tips for food served at Sonic, located at Midway, just north of Park in Plano, on May 9 from 10am - 5pm.  If you are in either of these areas, please stop by and support these teams as they strive to support The Samaritan Inn.
Our supporter John Rigo, a published poet, is donating proceeds from the sales of his two books of poetry to The Samaritan Inn thru June 1. Please take a moment to review and/or order the books; thank you for your support.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan Inn

Olga, 45 and her 5 year old daughter moved into The Samaritan Inn on April 6. Olga had previously lived in Michigan with her husband. Soon after their marriage he began using drugs and abusing her. She left him and stayed in a domestic violence shelter in Michigan until relatives in Collin County asked her to come here. She stayed with her relatives for awhile but soon felt she was a burden, so she came to the Inn.

Since arriving she has started divorce proceedings and applied for public housing. She has found a part time job and is continuing to look for a full time job. Her daughter attends school in Plano and receives special services because she is significantly hearing impaired. She has received one hearing aid but needs two; Olga is saving up for the second one.

Olga’s caseworker says that Olga “hit the floor running” on the day that she arrived and she feels confident that Olga will graduate from our program within two or three months.

Sincerely,

Lynne siganture

front road signRun for Cover, held last Saturday to benefit the Inn and organized by 3E McKinney, was a big success despite a little bit or rain. Over 300 walkers and runners showed up for the annual event. Special thanks to 7 year old Blake who collected over $500.00 for The Samaritan Inn by knocking on doors and asking for donations for the race.

Last Sunday, Trinity Presbyterian Church in McKinney held a “Blessing for the Animals” service. A special collection was taken to benefit The Samaritan Inn’s new kennel program.

The Star Foundation, which funds The Samaritan Inn, is having a Designer Boutique on April 30th and May 1. Luxurious new and gently used designer apparel, accessories, gifts, and home décor will be available. Reserve your tickets at:  www.starchildrens.com

Belated thanks to Petals and Vines, a beautiful shop on McKinney’s historic square- during Easter week every customer who brought a donation to The Samaritan Inn received a 20% discount.

The Friends of the Inn Thrift Store is having a special event from Tuesday, April 28 to Saturday, May 2.  We will be accepting donations of non-working electronic items- ordinarily we can not accept non working items, but for that week only we have made special arrangements to take them and turn them into financial support for our program. Got some things in your attic that you need to clear out?  Now is the time to bring them to the store! Typewriters, computers, copiers, fax machines, stereos, DVD players, cell phones, speakers, cameras, the list is endless…Remember, recycle event logo

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnJake is 48 years old and has lived on the streets for 30 years. His sister lives in Collin County and begged him to come to the area and try, again, to get his life back on track. Jake came to the Inn to request assistance in October of 2008 and told the caseworker that he had been involved with drugs and alcohol for many years, but that he had been clean for the last week. Jake was told that he would need more sobriety time before he could be considered a good candidate for the Inn. He was referred to an inpatient recovery program for low income individuals and told to return when he completed it. Many people are given this referral, but few follow through; Jake did.

In January he returned with a certitifcicate of completion from the program and became a resident on January 13th. Since then, Jake has been enrolled in an outpatient program at Avenues counseling, attends regular AA meetings and life skills classes. Jake has also found a job and, with the assistance of his caseworker, opened his very first bank account and deposited his first paycheck.

Yesterday Jake told his caseworker that his sister told him: I see Jake again, for the first time in a very long time”.  Jake cried because, at 48, he figured he had run out of chances; now he knows that he has not.

Lynne siganture

Let the sunshine in!Thank you to the anonymous donor who dropped off 300 (yes, that’s right 300!) hot dogs last week.

April is National Poetry Month and our supporter John Rigo, a published poet, is donating proceeds from the sales of his two books of poetry to The Samaritan Inn. To review and/or order the books go to: http://texaspoets.wordpress.com/2009/03/31a-fund-raising-program-for-the-samaritan-inn-of-mkinney-texas-by-john-j-rigo-published-poet-and-commentator/

Thank you to Dr. Kahn and Don Hudson from The Center of Preventive Medicine who recently re-decorated their office and donated forty office chairs to us.

Debi Tomkins from the Panther Creek, Ladies of harleyHarley, organized an Easter Egg Run and raised over $2,000 for The Samaritan Inn last Saturday. The ride was 200 miles long and concluded at Nate’s Seafood restaurant in Allen. I was thrilled to be there to thank all the riders for their participation.

Looking for a good restaurant? Try Chamberlain’s Fish Market Grill (4525 Beltline in Addison) and enjoy Filet Mignon and Alaskan King Crab legs served with onion roasted mashed potatoes at half price-$29.95. This offer is available from April 20 thru April 26 to anyone who brings in two non-perishable food items for The Samaritan Inn.

The sales start next week.

Please help support these teams of high school students who have accepted our challange to raise funds for The Samaritan Inn.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnJackie is 46 years old, the mother of two grown children and separated. She was laid off from her job last year and gave up her apartment. She used unemployment benefits to pay for an extended stay hotel room, hoping she would find work before her benefits ran out, she did find a job, but not in time to pay for another week at the hotel, so Jackie came to The Samaritan Inn.

Since arriving she has continued at her new job (which she loves) and is saving money for a new apartment. Jackie is also hoping to return to college. She has been going part time for several years, recently received two, $1000 scholarships and is now just two semesters short of a Bachelors Degree. While at the Inn Jackie is attending counseling and life skill classes and has a move out date of May 31.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnStuart is 19 years old. He was in his senior year of high school when he was caught stealing and went to jail. His parents would not help him in anyway and when he was released from jail, they said he could not come home. Stuart had no money, had never held a job, and did not know where to go. He spent a month staying on the couches of various friends; finally he came to the Inn on March 5th.

Once here, he worked in our truffle operation and got some basic job skills that enabled him to find a part time job. He was also re-enrolled in school and, with some catch up work, will graduate this year. Stuart will also receive counseling and attend life skill classes.

You must be 18 years old to enter the Samaritan Inn, but our usual client is typically quite a bit older. Stuart’s Caseworker and our Children’s Caseworker are collaborating to find the best possible plan for him that will insure successful independence.

Sincerely,

Lynne siganture

Thanks to all federal employees who recently designated over $5,000 to the Samaritan Inn via their United Way payroll deduction.

It’s hard to believe, but our Gateway apartments have now been open for one year and we will soon have our first graduate. Gateway was specifically designed to give shelter graduates additional time to become fully independent and its working- Gateway resident Janet and her five year old son are preparing to move into their own home this weekend!

Can you help? We need cleaning supplies- glass and floor cleaner, cleanser, disinfectants and toilet bowl cleaner. Donations of any of these items will be gratefully accepted at the shelter, at any time.cleaners

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnJessica, age 40 and her 10 year old son arrived at the Samaritan Inn on February 10th after spending 30 days at Hopes Door. Hope’s Door is a shelter in Plano for victims of domestic abuse. Jessica and her husband had been married for 20 years and she suffered significant abuse the entire time. He was demeaning, controlling, and violent. He would not allow her to have any friendships or learn to drive a car. Jessica’s son had witnessed the abuse and had behavior problems.

Jessica is still not sure why she finally found the courage to leave, but she is so grateful that she did. At The Samaritan Inn she and her son are both in counseling and Jessica is a part of our vocational training program, as she has no job experience at all. And- she is learning to drive.

We believe Jessica will have the tools she needs to find a job very soon and then can begin to save her money and plan for independence.

Thanks to Hillcrest Animal Rescue, Collin County Animal Services and Trinity Presbyterian Church, all of whom have offered assistance with our new program designed to enable homeless people to keep their pets, while they are living in our shelter. The kennels have now been constructed but we will need some sort of covered structure to keep them in by early summer. If you have ideas, suggestions or contributions for this cause please contact me at lynnesipiora@thesamaritaninn.org we will also need donations of dog houses (igloo type) bowls and food. They may be brought to the Inn at any time.

Run for Cover, the 1, 5 and 10k run/walk to benefit the Inn is already registering individuals and families for this fun, annual event. Please plan to join us on April 18th at 8am at the Stonebridge Ranch beach Club. For more information or to register on line please go to: www.runforcover.org.

The Junior Samaritan program is now off and running- four teams of high school students from McKinney and Plano will compete to see who can raise the most money for the Samaritan Inn. Next week we will share the details of their innovative business plans.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnCindy, 51, came to the Inn at the end of August. She had been working at a local grocery store for several years, but due to the decline in the economy her hours were cut and she could no longer afford her rent. She had some savings, but had been forced to use them to help her siblings pay for her father’s funeral. Cindy was depressed by her circumstances and had lost her self confidence. Once here, she received counseling and worked diligently with her case worker to prepare a plan for getting her full time hours back- the plan worked and Cindy was a full time employee again in November. Unfortunately at the same time, Cindy’s health began to deteriorate and she was diagnosed with cancer. She was advised to get a cat scan with follow up radiation and chemo. Cindy has no health insurance and makes too much money to qualify for indigent health care, so she has applied for Medicaid. Medicaid approval typically takes a minimum of 6 weeks so Cindy’s health care is on hold until that time. Cindy, however, continues to work and save her money. She hopes to have graduated by the end of April and begin her cancer treatment in May.

Cindy’s strength and courage in the midst of so many issues is remarkable.

Sincerely,

Lynne siganture

Last week the news was filled with statistics indicating that Texas has more homeless children then any other state-this certainly reflects our population. Families with school age children are the people most often seeking our services.

Charlie Brown recently presented a check to us at the Allen Chamber of Commerce meeting. It was the proceeds earned from a fundraising cruise that Charlie Brown’s Travel agency had put together for us. Passengers were thrilled to enjoy a fabulous trip and donate to the Inn at the same time. It was so successful Charlie has another trip scheduled in 2010. Want more information? Call Charlie at (972) 880-4141.

mazdaWant to win a brand new Miata? It’s easy- just purchase a raffle ticket for $100.00 and keep your fingers crossed. El Dorado Motors in McKinney has made this exciting fundraising opportunity available for the Inn. Tickets are on sale at our facility and on line-in addition, the Miata will be at all of our other 2009 events. Take a look at it when you attend the True Rumors  VIP Sample Sale this Thursday night!

Thank you to the youth group at St. Gabriel’s for our new digital photo frame, we will use it in our lobby to thank and recognize our many volunteers.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnNancy came to The Samaritan Inn 6 months ago after a lifetime of serious problems. As a child, she was molested by her father and as a result, she had two abortions. When she finally found the courage to tell her mother, her mother said Nancy had to leave. She spent the next five years on the street and had three children, by three different men, when she was 16, 17 and 20 years old. After considerable hardships she got her life back on track and earned an Associate Degree. She found a job and was taking care of her children until her parents       re-entered her life. They were still together and had fallen on hard times. They asked Nancy to rent them an apartment in her name. Nancy believed that helping them might give her an opportunity to heal and initiate a new relationship with them, so she did as they asked and rented an apartment for them in the same complex where she lived. Her parents missed three rent payments and were evicted and so was Nancy, because her name was on their lease. As Nancy prepares to graduate next month she wrote: …”coming to The Samaritan Inn was the best thing that could have happened to me, the staff was excellent. My caseworker, Gary, has taught me the meaning of adult responsibility and helped me learn how to stand up for myself in the right way.”

Program Notes

PeteThree years ago we received funding from Dallas Social Venture Partners, we also received Pete Meldrum. He was their liaison with our organization and when he passed away last week, The Samaritan Inn lost a friend and a champion. Pete was the essence of compassion and justice and the affect that he had on our program and staff will always remain.

front road signOur heartfelt gratitude goes out to the Cup Filler, the beautiful Christian bookstore on McKinney’s Historic Square. Owner, Dale Terry, is now carrying Samaritan Inn cookbooks, selling Samaritan Inn made chocolate truffles and has installed a donation box so that customers may let The Samaritan Inn “keep the change.”

Big congrats to our kitchen staff who just received a 100% rating from the health department!

Thank you to the Gleason Life Group of Chase Oaks Church who continue to make meaningful donations to our program- yesterday paper products, towels, wash cloths and  fresh fruit.

Supporter Dean Hansen of Farmers Insurance invites you to receive a personal VIP (Value Insurance Package) quote that will include auto, home, umbrella and life coverage, tailored to each individual’s needs. For each friend of the Inn that requests the quote, Dean will donate ten dollars to our agency in your name. Interested? Contact Dean Hansen at Dean@iKnowDean.com or (214) 460-3811.

You may not believe this, but

at least a few times a month, a client comes to the Inn looking for shelter, but decides it is better to live on the streets or in their car than to give up their dog. Our licensing requirements prevent us from taking pets. As dog loving staff, this has always been difficult for us. We know how important pets are, especially when you have lost everything else. So…. we are in the process of building dog kennels on our property so that we can accommodate our resident’s pets when necessary. We are starting with three kennels and hope to have a covered structure by summer. As always, we will need your help, we will post a list of needs in the April newsletter.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnMike is 43 years old and had been a very successful business owner. He estimates his previous annual income at $400,000; he was married, had a son and a beautiful home. Despite his successes, he was depressed and when he discovered one of his employees with methamphetamines, he tried them.  As is so often the case with this drug, he was instantly hooked and a three year downward spiral began. Mike lost his family, his home and his business. He finally hit bottom when he realized his next step was prison or death. Mike came to the Samaritan Inn on March 4th after completing a 90 day rehab program. He has a sponsor from the People Affected by Addiction program and  will be attending an intensive outpatient program at Avenues Counseling. His goal is to stay clean, find full time employment and save the money he will need to start again. This is a very delicate stage in Mike’s recovery; we have provided the resources and he will need to provide the rest.

Sincerely,

Lynne siganture

front road signThe Samaritan Inn is a United Way agency and values our partnership with them. We will present three proposals for funding to their panel, on site, Thursday, March 5th.

Hope Fellowship Church has graciously volunteered to build our new garden, on the grounds at the Inn. Once built, the planting will be done as an Eagle Scout project. The garden will be tended by our residents, with the hope of growing some of our own produce this year.

April 18th is the date for the annual Run for Cover family run/walk to benefit The Samaritan Inn. The 1, 5, and 10k walk/run is presented by 3e McKinney and will take place at the Stonebridge Ranch Beach Club. Individual registration is $20.00 and family registration is $30.00. Sponsors are still needed. For more information go to www.runforcover.org

Last Saturday, Janet Warren, the fabulous thrift store staff, the dedicated volunteers from St. Gabriel’s Catholic Community and McKinney Youth Leadership, and the incomparable Jan Ferris pulled off a record breaking sidewalk sale -making over $4,000 for The Samaritan Inn!!!!!!

Let’s hear it for the Ladies of Harley! They are sponsoring an Easter Egg Run to benefit the Samaritan Inn on April 11th. The ride starts at 9am at Harley Davidson in Allen. Want more information? Contact LOH@PantherCreekHOG.com

True Rumors, the high end women’s clothing store in McKinney, will be having a huge sample sale on March 19, 20, and 21, featuring new clothing manufactured for stores like Chico’s and Coldwater Creek. Incredible bargains will be available and thousands of people are expected to attend. A VIP party will be held on the evening of the 19th for anyone interested in a first look. Tickets are $25.00 and proceeds will benefit the Inn. Tickets may be purchased at True Rumors.
Also on VIP night, True Rumors will host all of our female residents and present each of them with a gift certificate so that they too can shop. We are so appreciative of this incredibly generous opportunity-please make plans to attend.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnCarrie is 18 years old and a high school senior. She was raised by her grandparents until she was 5 and then removed from their home because of domestic violence. At that point, Carrie went to foster care and eventually was adopted. Carrie left her adoptive family last year because, she says, they were abusive. She stayed with another family for awhile but was ultimately asked to leave. She came to The Samaritan Inn on January 30th. Carrie is currently in high school but is very behind because of all of the time that she has missed. Our Children’s Caseworker is monitoring her attendance on a daily basis and working closely with the school to bring her up to speed. After school, Carrie has a part time job and receives tutoring at the Inn. We hope that Carrie will soon be able to get into City House, the Plano Youth Shelter that has a specific program for homeless 18-21 year olds.

Sincerely,

Lynne siganture

The 14th annual Lil Lambs consignment sale will be held on February 27 - 28 and will feature infants and children’s clothing. The proceeds will benefit families in Collin County including The Samaritan Inn. Location: Greenville Oaks Church of Christ, 703 S Greenville Avenue, Allen, 9am.

All incoming clients are subject to a drug test before being admitted to the Inn and the tests are costly- but, effective immediately, StatLab Medical Products will donate two hundred tests every quarter- this represents a huge savings to us and we are very appreciative.

Thank you to Shannon Hutto’s First Grade Class at J. W. Webb Elementary School in McKinney, who recently gifted The Samaritan Inn with children’s books for our playroom.

It’s time for another super sidewalk sale at the Friends of The Inn Thrift Center, this Saturday, February 28th from 9 to 3:30. We have been overwhelmed with quality donations and we will be selling everything at incredible prices, please plan to stop by and find a special bargain.

An orientation will be held on either Sunday, March 1 at 2pm or Saturday, March 6 at 2pm. Teams will come up with their own fundraising plan and then execute the plan by early May. All participants will receive a letter of commendation to be used as part of their college application and recognition in the press. Need more information? Story of the Week

The Samaritan Inn

Larry, age 59, came to the Inn on October 13th after he ran out of options. He lost his 22 year job as Merchandising Manager for Dillards, he lost his car, his home and, ultimately, his wife. His savings had been used to support himself and he was clinically depressed. After admission to the Inn, treating his depression became the priority. He was referred for mental health services, he received a prescription for anti depressant drugs and he attended counseling sessions.

It wasn’t until January that we began to see a change in Larry and felt he was ready to begin to look for employment once again. He was thrilled when he was asked to come back for a second interview at a retail store and immediately took what little money he had left and used it to purchase a new jacket and slacks at Kohl’s. After purchasing the new clothes he got on CCart (McKinney’s public transportation) to return to the Inn-but halfway back he realized he had left the slacks at the store. The bus driver (also a volunteer at The Samaritan Inn) saw how upset he was and asked how he could help. Larry explained.

The bus driver completed his route and then took Larry back to the store to look for his forgotten slacks. He explained the situation to the store manager who immediately gave Larry a new and better pair of slacks and then personally helped him choose a shirt, tie, shoes and even a pair of black socks for his interview, at no cost.

No word yet on the results of the interview, but Larry still can’t get over the fact that two compassionate and generous people would help him. We are happy for Larry but not surprised. The Samaritan Inn is funded by compassionate and generous people everyday.

Sincerely,

Lynne siganture

Program Notes

Last week, we told you about Kelly who needed help to re-new her CNA (Certified Nurses Assistant) certification and I am pleased to announce that, within half an hour, she was covered. Thank you to all the generous people who made that happen!

The Mavericks have graciously donated tickets to their game on the 17th of March and we have 20 parents and kids who would like to attend-is there anyone who might have a vehicle to transport them? If so, please contact Tracy Orwig, our Children’s Caseworker at: tracyorwig@thesamaritaninn.org

APAA (Association of Persons Affected by Addiction) is a not for profit located in Dallas. They provide recovery support services for people recovering from addiction and will now be providing peer to peer support for residents of The Samaritan Inn who fall into this category. They will come twice a week and act in the same capacity as a sponsor in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Welcome new Dinner Club member John Bickle, owner of the Stat Lab Company.

The “40 Days of Purpose” Bible study is currently being held at the Inn for all interested residents, thanks to North East Bible Church.

Last week, I had an opportunity for an Oprah moment thanks to Jennifer Ellenberg of Frisco. Jennifer generously donated her car to the Samaritan Inn and we, in turn, donated it to one of our graduates, who was at risk of losing her independence because of transportation problems. It was an incredible moment. Many not for profits accept donations of cars and then sell them at auction- we provide them to people in need, based on caseworkers recommendations. Thank you Jennifer, you have helped a very special woman keep her job and her home.

At our last staff meeting we decided it would be a great idea for us to start a garden-it would provide fresh produce, it would engage our residents and it would cut down on food costs-win/win/win! We have an area where it might work but we need help. We think this would be a great opportunity for an experienced gardener, an Eagle Scout project, or even a family activity. Interested? Please contact Cheryl at cherylspofford@thesamaritaninn.org.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan Inn

Helen, age 38 and her 16 year old son came to the Inn on February 4th. Helen also has an 11 year old daughter but she is currently in a residential treatment facility due to a variety of behavioral issues. Helen and her son had been living with Helen’s boyfriend, but when they broke up, he had the electricity and water turned off in their apartment and Helen did not have the money necessary to re-start service. Helen’s son is a Junior in high school and will soon begin working in our truffle program so that he can obtain vocational skills and prepare to find a job when school is out for the summer. Helen has found a full time job in the food services industry and is committed to saving the money necessary for a security deposit and first months rent at a new apartment. She meets weekly with her caseworker to be sure that her savings are on track and that she is attending mandatory life skill classes.

Sincerely,

Program Notes

A huge thank you to Dungan’s Floors in McKinney who recently responded to our plea and carpeted our front office and volunteer room at no cost!

Food Source, a local company, has partnered with The Samaritan Inn to provide food for our kitchen and employment opportunities for our residents.

Thanks, once again, to the Travelers Insurance Company in Richardson who recently named The Samaritan Inn as the beneficiary of their recent fundraiser.

A special Valentine’s Day dinner for our residents will be provided by El Chico restaurant in McKinney.

We will present our Community Block Grant request to the City of Plano on February 12th.

Thanks to the Coca Cola Company which recently donated enough Coca Cola merchandise (pillows, glassware, clothing, etc.) to fill our entire truck; stop by the Thrift Store soon to see what has arrived!

In December, The Samaritan Inn received just over $6,000 in designated United Way donations from employment campaigns- thanks to all  who thought of us.

We continue to look for front office hosts to greet visitors and volunteers, answer the phones and do general office work.  We have four hour shifts available, seven days a week. Interested? E-mail Cheryl at cherylspofford@thesamaritaninn.org.

The final Gateway apartment will be occupied this week by a man named (are you ready?) Valentine. How perfect is that?  The apartment was furnished by St. Gabriel’s Catholic Community and the team leader is our own wonderful, long-time volunteer, Patti Morris.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan Inn
From time to time we have residents with special needs and when we do, we publicize them in our e-newsletter and hope that they will strike a chord with someone in our community of supporters.

Kelly and her two babies, age 2 and 8 months, fall into that category. They came to the Inn after her husband abandoned the family. Initially they stayed with Kelly’s mother, but her tiny apartment could simply not accommodate them all.

Kelly feels it is unlikely that she will receive regular child support and so she is committed to supporting her family alone. Prior to having her children she was a Certified Nursing Assistant in a nursing home; a job she enjoyed and a field where there are always openings. To re-new her certification, Kelly will need to take a class, purchase the required books, pay for a TB test, and pay the certification testing fee- for a total of about $500.00. This certification will help ensure her future. If you can help Kelly, please call or email me at lynnesipiora@thesamaritaninn.org

The Samaritan Inn

Collin County’s only homeless shelter

The Director’s Report

Week 5/2009 February 3, 2009

There are 113 people living at The Samaritan Inn, 35 are children.

Weekly Statistics:

Intakes:  9

Exits:  3

Graduates:  1

Program Notes
Every year HUD mandates that a homeless count be done. The count is conducted by the Dallas Homeless Alliance and typically focuses only on the chronically homeless, so the numbers for Collin County are typically very low and completely misleading. This year the count will appropriately include people living in shelters, transitional living programs like Gateway, long term hotels and ‘couch surfers’, those people who move from friend to friend. Given this, we expect this year’s numbers to be far more accurate.

Thanks to Cottonwood Creek Baptist Church for their recent food drive!

Gateway opened last April and today it is full! It took some time because we chose potential residents very carefully, but with every apartment now occupied it has truly become a small community of its own.

I was looking at our census today and was amazed to see some interesting cities of origin for our residents. As you may know, Collin County residents always take precedence, because of the funding we receive from several Collin County cities, but when there is a bed available and no other takers, we will admit anyone who meets our admission criteria. Our current residents are from McKinney, Plano, Princeton, Wylie, Allen, Anna, The Colony, Arlington, Denton, Denison, Dallas, Framers Branch and Chicago, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs and Laguna Hills, California.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnAnn, 40 years old, and her 15 year old daughter came to the Inn on January 15th after she lost her job and was unable to pay her rent. Ann is aggressively looking for a new job but it is difficult because of her daughter. Ann must find a job that coincides with her daughter’s school hours because her daughter is autistic and appropriate before and after school care is very difficult to find. Fortunately Ann has Medicaid for her daughter and she receives disability. Ann’s caseworker is sensitive to this special employment need and our Vocational Counselor is seeking opportunities within the school district.

Sincerely,

Lynne Sipiora

Thanks to Frito Lay employees who came last week to paint our offices for us! The paint looks great, but now the floors look bad, isn’t that always the way? If anyone has a connection for tile or wood laminate, we would love to hear about it. The areas that are in need are our front office and volunteer room and together they are just under 1,000 square feet. Can you help? Call or email Lynne Sipiora at (972) 542-5302 ext 229 or lynnesipiora@thesamaritaninn.org.

Metabolic Research Center, now open in McKinney and a weight loss center, urges their clients who are seeking to lose weight to bring in their canned goods, which they will then donate to The Samaritan Inn.

Thanks to Crest Leasing who recently donated enough blankets for every bed in our facility-given the temperatures, the timing could not have been better!

We have a variety of volunteer openings for the position of Office Host- this position is responsible for our front office and will answer phones and greet visitors and volunteers to our program. Four hour shifts from 7am until 9pm, 7 days a week are available. Interested? Please email Cheryl Spofford at cspofford@thesamaritaninn.org or call (972) 542-5302 ext 228.

Imagine how great you would look driving a 2009 Mazda Miata convertible? Well now is your chance to win one. Thanks to our good friends at Eldorado Motors in McKinney we are raffling off this beautiful car to one lucky winner, who’s name will be drawn at our October gala. Tickets are $100.00. Please call or email Molly Castillo for more information or to purchase a ticket (972) 542-5302 ext 232 or mcastillo@thesamaritaninn.org.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnMike and Eleanor entered the Samaritan Inn on January 19th with their four children ages 7-10. They are a local McKinney family that has experienced many hardships.

Mike has a full time job and makes 2,000 a month. It has been very difficult to maintain the family on that amount and, as a result, their rent was late and they were evicted from their apartment. The eviction, though difficult, was also a blessing- windows that were not caulked and an accumulation of mold and mildew had caused them all to have constant upper respiratory infections and exasperated the children’s asthma.

Though they have only been here a week, they each report feeling much better. Mike continues to work and Eleanor is now looking for a job as well. They believe with a second job and an opportunity to save some money while here, they will be able to start again in the near future. The entire family has been attending counseling sessions, while Mike and Eleanor also attend parenting and budget management classes.

They came in defeated and depressed but just today Eleanor remarked that she just knows things will soon be better.

Sincerely,

Lynne Sipiora
